Jendouba-Forest fires: 23 homes damaged in Ain Draham and Fernana

Forest fires, on Monday, damaged some 20 houses in Hammam Bourguiba (delegation of Ain Draham) and three other houses in Beni Mtir (Fernana delegation), while no casualties reported, secretary-general of the Jendouba governorate, Tarak Ghdhabni told TAP.

Fresh fires broke out on Tuesday in the localities of El Mrij (delegation of Ain Draham), Ourahnia and Jaballah (Tabarka delegation), while efforts are continuing to put out the flames in the forests of Zouainia, Ouled Hellal and Oued El Dhlam, regional director of civil protection Mounir Ritabi told TAP.

Members of the regional committee for the fight against natural disasters do not rule out the criminal origin of these concurrent fires in dense and hard-to-reach forests, they told TAP.

In a statement released Tuesday, the Ministry of National Defence said army units have since Monday evacuated families living in forest areas affected by fires.

For his part, Prime Minister Youssef Chahed instructed the ministers of National Defence and the Interior to go to the scene to monitor the situation.

A coordination unit composed of representatives of the Ministries of Defence, Interior, Health, Agriculture and Public Works and Housing was set up at the Government Palace to organise operations in the Jendouba governorate.
