Libya/Tunisia: Brigui Brace Inspires Etoile Back to Winning Ways

Midfielder Alaya Brigui scored twice and the other from Ahmed Akaichi was all Etoile du Sahel needed to beat Ahly Tripoli of Libya 3-0 on Saturday in Sousse for their first win at the pool stage.

A spirited second half performance from ‘Les Diables Rouges’ who were playing behind closed-doors following sanctions from the CAF Disciplinary Board, boosted their chances towards a successful defence of the title they won last year.

The victory was not enough to lift the Tunisians from the third spot in Group B but took them to two points behind Kawkab Athletic Club of Marrakesh and three adrift of leaders FUS Rabat.

With Ahly Tripoli goalie Mohamed Abdaula denying Brigui the opener on 37 minutes, the workaholic midfielder will find his breakthrough in the second half.

A three-man move involving Guinean Alkhaly Bangoura and Akaichi had Brigui at the receiving end to break the deadlock on 57 minutes. An Akaichi cross from a Bangoura pass met the head of Ahly Tripoli defender Ali Salama onto the path of Brigui, who slotted home coolly for his first goal in as many matches.

Brigui, an unfamiliar name on Etoile’s score sheets doubled the lead on 68 minutes, trapping nicely a pass from Hamza Lahmar before firing past Abdaula.

Akaichi registered his name on the score cards with the third on 77 minutes from a Hamdi Nagguez assist and wrap up victory.

The Libyans fought hard to reduce the deficit but Etoile goalie Mohamed Zied Jebali stood between them and the consolatory goal.

Ahly Tripoli, the only side without a win in the group hosts Etoile in the reverse in a fortnight with their eyes on a maiden win.
