Tourist arrivals up 29.3% (FTH)

Tunisia recorded 2,561.077 tourist arrivals, up 29.3% from January 1 to June 30, 2017, compared with the same period in 2016.

“The signs of a recovery in European tourism to Tunisia destination are there though the achievements on the European markets are below expectations,” said Wednesday, deputy secretary-general of the Tunisian Federation of Hotels (FTH) Mouna Ben Halima.

Speaking at a press conference, she pointed out that forecasts for 2017, suggest a 30% growth in the number of European tourists, to 2 million visitors, compared with 1.5 million Europeans in 2016.

According to the data presented by the FTH, Maghreb tourism remains predominant with the entry of 1,413.502 persons, that is up by 44.7%, compared to the same period in 2016.

The lion’s share returns to Algerians (766,383 entries up by 61.2%), followed by Libyans (619,662 up by 30.6%).

In terms of traditional markets, the French ranks first with 202,350 tourists (+43.2%), followed by Germans with 60,038 tourists and Italians with 36,596 tourists.

Belgians are also returning to Tunisia, registering 17,807 entries with a rise of 99.4%.

On the other hand, the number of Russian tourists dropped by 20% from January 1 to June 30, 2017, down to 149,691 visitors.

Thanks to the measures taken by the Tunisian government in favour of Chinese tourists who now benefit from an exemption from entry visas to visit Tunisia, the country welcomed 8,885 Chinese tourists, that is up by 350.1% compared with the same period in 2016.

The total number of foreign non-residents thus reached 2,044.361 entries up by 36.1%.

In another connection, the arrivals of Tunisians living abroad reached 516,716 visitors, registering an increase of 7.8% compared to the previous year.

Similarly, the number of overnight stays climbed by 20.3% between 2016 and 2017 (from January 1 to June 30, 2017) to 6,420.327 overnight stays.
