Tunisia attends for 1st time Ministerial Conference on Francophonie on Culture

Pending the World Summit of the Francophonie that it will host in 2020, Tunisia took part for the first time in the 4th Ministerial Conference of the Francophonie on Culture, July 22-23 in Abidjan. Tunisia was represented by Culture Minister Mohamed Zine el Abidine who chaired the closing day of the Conference culminating in the proclamation of the Abidjan Declaration.

In the presence of International Organisation of la Francophonie (OIF) Secretary-General Michaelle Jean and French-speaking countries’ culture ministers, Mohamed Zine el Abidine pointed out in his address that the Francophonie is a constantly evolving concept and it is therefore important to rethink our approach to cultural diversity in light of changes in the geo-strategic situation and the world situation marked by the proliferation of the scourges of extremism and obscurantism.

He also said that Tunisia, which attaches great importance to culture, considers that the Francophonie is a concept that goes beyond linguistic and ideological considerations. In this sense, the Minister affirmed that Tunisia is convinced that the Francophonie is a space for peaceful coexistence between the different cultures of different countries which share the same human values whatever their geographical positions and their historical relations with the French language.

The Conference’s work, which focused on “the role of international regulatory bodies in addressing emerging cultural issues”, “culture and sustainable development”, “the economy of culture” and “international co-operation” closed by the proclamation of the Abidjan Declaration on Cultural Diversity.

The declaration includes the role of culture in sustainable development and the role of the digital revolution and civil society in strengthening cultural diversity and promoting public cultural policies.
