113 leaders and members of the regional and local offices of Ennahdha movement on Saturday announced their collective resignation from the party.
In a statement issued on Saturday, signed by MPs at the House of People’s Representatives (ARP) whose activities had been suspended as well as members of the National Constituent Assembly, members of the Shura Council and officials of the party’s central, regional and local structures, they justified their resignation by “the failure to introduce reforms within the party..
“We opted to uphold commitment to defend democracy and free themselves from the constraints imposed by their membership in the Ennahdha movement,” they explained.
The resigners blamed the party’s leadership for “the worsening of the general situation in the country, which, according to them, paved the way for a coup against the Constitution and the authorities stemming from it.”
The political elite is also to blame for the failure to set up constitutional institutions and independent authorities due to miscalculations, ignoring the criteria of competence in making choices and decisions, they argued.
“The blockage of democracy within the party and the centralisation of the decision in recent years, by a group close to the president of the movement, have led to illogical political alliances in contradiction with the party’s electoral promises,” they claimed.
The resignation statement was signed by Samir Dilou, Nassiba Ben Ali, Moez Belhadj Rhouma, Jamila Ksiksi (ARP deputies), Abdellatif Mekki, Mohamed Ben Salem, Monia Ben Brahim (constituents) and Zoubeïr Chehoudi (member of the Shura Council).
