117 fires were reported in the past 24 hours, the double of June’s daily average, Director of the central operational room at the National Office for Civil Protection Colonel Salah Korbi said Sunday.
63 of these fires have destroyed 65 hectares, he specified to TAP.
Saturday’s forest fires were reported notably in Radès forest in Ben Arous governorate (10ha), in Toucha locality in Sebiba delegation (Kasserine governorate) destroying 30h, in Jebal Om Jedour in Jedlian delegation (Kasserine) affecting 10ha and in Jebal bou kotrane in Balta Bou Ouan delegation (Jendouba) destorying 8ha.
These fires were put out in coordination with civil protection officials and the Forest General Directorate.
Rising temperatures are believed to be the main cause of the fires, he estimated.
The number of fires recorded in Tunisia in 2020 surpassed those reported between 2011 and 2019, according to data provided by the General Directorate of Forests at the Agriculture Ministry.
