14th session of Tunisia-European Union Association Council May 14 in Brussels

The 14th session of the Tunisia-European Union Association Council will be held on May 14 in Brussels (Belgium), the Foreign Ministry said in a press release Sunday.

The council will be co-chaired by Foreign Minister Khemaies Jhinaoui and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini. Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn will attend the meeting.

The meeting will review the development of relations between Tunisia and the EU since the holding of the 13th session last May 2017 and discuss ways to step up co-operation between both sides, the press release added.

It will further help identify opportunities to strengthen the privileged partnership between both sides for the the period beyond 2020, the same source pointed out.

The session will also provide an opportunity to launch new co-operation initiatives to boost partnership, notably in terms of decentralisation following the holding of the May 6 Municipal elections, the press release reads.

These initiatives also concern the tourism, cultural, development and youth fields. A Training and diplomatic exchange agreement between Tunisia and the EU will also be inked.

Tunisia aspires to achieve a qualitative leap in the relations with the European Union so as to consolidate the steps taken on the path to democratic transition and to help overcome security and economic challenges.

The aim is also to carry out the different economic reforms and priorities of the 2016-2020 Development Plan, the same source indicated.

The Council will also discuss strategic priorities for 2018-2020, in addition to democratic transition, economic reforms and trade relations, the EU said on its official website.

The significant bilateral co-operation, including the EU-Tunisia Youth Partnership and issues of migration and mobility will also be reviewed, the same source added.
