3% growth goal is feasible (Laadhari)

The achievement of 3% growth by the end of 2018 is a feasible goal in light of the signs of improved productivity in the agriculture and tourism sectors and phosphate production, said Minister of Development, Investment and International Co-operation Zied Laadhari.

Speaking at a hearing by the Finance, Planning and Development Committee at House of People’s Representatives (HPR) on the economic budget, he added that the government aims to achieve a 5.5% growth in the fisheries and agriculture sectors compared to 2.3% this year, 5.3% growth in manufacturing industries (versus 3.5%), 2.4% in non-manufacturing industries and 7.2% growth in marketed services.

Laadhari noted that the draft economic budget for 2018 is based in its predictions on an improvement in cereals production to 19 million quintals against a production of 16 million quintals in 2017, a rise in the production of olives to one million tonnes against 500 thousand tons expected in 2017, in addition to a growth in phosphate production which should be 6,500 tonnes against 5 thousand tonnes in 2017 and the improvement of overnight stays in hotel units.

The minister said the development model will focus next year on achieving a more balanced growth based on the return of contribution of exports to growth, increased investment and especially private investment, not to mention a rise in consumption for the creation of wealth.

The minister said, in this regard, that the volume of overall investment will increase from 18.3 billion dinars to 21.3 billion dinars against a decrease in the rate of private consumption from 9.2% expected for 2017 to 2.6% in 2018.
