45% of startups manage to cover their costs (Tunisian startups Index)

Only 45% of startups manage to cover their expenses, reveals a study entitled “Tunisian startups Index / TSIndex /”, conducted on a sample of more than 320 Tunisian companies operating mainly in the ICT field.

These startups achieve a turnover of more than 30MD, representing nearly 1,000 jobs, according to this study which covers 6 axes related to the legislative and regulatory framework, the human capital, the financing, the support and the infrastructure, besides the entrepreneurial culture and access to markets.

Presented Tuesday in Tunis, this study carried out by the Association “Tunisian Startups”, the Friedrich-Naumann Foundation for Freedom and the Agency for the Promotion of Industry and Innovation (APII), also shows that 58% of startups carry out export operations destined for Europe (20 %), Africa (21%) Middle East (7.5%) and North America (5%).

Nearly 28% of start-up activities are carried out on the local market, reveals the TSIndex.

“Startups that manage to cover their expenses are in the growth phase, while companies that have not been able to achieve this goal, are usually in the project launch phase (launch ideas, prototype …),” said Zied Ouled Ali, vice-president of the “Tunisian Startups” Association.

In a statement to TAP, the official said that the launch of the TS index project, the subject of this study, has for main objectives the supply of data on startups in Tunisia and the improvement of the entrepreneurial system.

Ralf Erbel, representative of the Friedrich-Naumann Foundation for Freedom who finances the project, said that the project TSIndex is an interactive platform on the Internet that aims to evaluate the entrepreneurial system in Tunisia and the contribution of startups in the Tunisian economy. “This index will be updated periodically,” Erbel said.

According to Association president Amel Saidane, the ‘Startup Act”, which will be discussed, Wednesday, in plenary session by the deputies of the House of People’s Representatives (HPR), will make it possible to overcome the administrative and customs obstacles which hinder the development of the entrepreneurial fabric in Tunisia.

Regarding financing, the official announced that “new tools will be made available to investors (structures or individuals) who are registered in the capital of a number of startups lacking funding.”

According to Saidane, the association pushes for the promulgation of this law, which will not fail to unblock the situation of many young Tunisian entrepreneurs.
