60th Anniversary of February 8, 1958 events: towards creation of Tunisian-Algerian Free Trade Area in Sakiet Sidi Youssef

A free trade zone will be created between Tunisia and Algeria under an agreement reached at the end of a Tunisian-Algerian working session held Thursday in Sakiet Sidi Youssef City Hall, on the 60th anniversary of the February 8, 1958 events.

The working session, co-chaired by Prime Minister Youssef Chahed and his Algerian counterpart, Ahmed Ouyahia, resulted in an agreement on the formation of joint Tunisian-Algerian committees whose mission will be to consider development projects for inhabitants of the border areas.

Projects of energy interconnection between border governorates in the two countries were also considered.

During this working session, Youssef Chahed emphasised the significance of the celebration of the events of Sakiet Sidi Youssef, saying they reflect the bonds of solidarity between the two countries at the time of liberation of the Algerian people.

“We will work to expand bilateral cooperation and increase trade between the two countries,” he said, noting that Tunisia is working in perfect coordination with Algeria in the security and military fields to fight terrorism and organised crime and protect the two countries’ economy.

“The project to supply the city of Sakiet Sidi Youssef with natural gas has entered its final phase,” said the Algerian Prime Minister, noting that the gas pipeline has already arrived at Tunisian borders via the border post of Sakiet Sidi Youssef.

“The Tunisian and Algerian energy companies have only to finalise the work of supplying gas to the city, he said.

Two Tunisian and Algerian delegations visited the city of Sakiet Sidi Youssef to commemorate the anniversary of the events that had occurred on February 8, 1958 in this city.

The Tunisian delegation was composed of Prime Minister Youssef Chahed, Foreign Minister KhemaAes Jhinaoui, Minister of National Defence Abdelkarim Zbidi and Minister of the Interior Lotfi Brahem, while the Algerian delegation included Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia, Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdelkader Messahel and Minister of the Interior, Local Authorities and Territorial Planning, Noureddine Bedoui.
