7th edition of “digital holidays” closes

Several gaps are noted in information technology teaching as well as education and access to digital culture in Tunisia, Education Minister Hatem Ben Salem said Saturday after the 7th edition of digital holidays. “Ben Salem recalled that the same computer tools (software) are used to teach since the 1990s, while this field requires an up-to-date review.

The Minister of Education called during this two-day event, organised under the banner of “holidays, an opportunity for creation” and ended Saturday at the National Centre for Technologies in Education (French : CNTE), on the need to generalise such an initiative across all regions to provide the opportunity for a broader target to benefit from digital culture.

In this context, Ben Salem emphasised the role that the CNTE must play in terms of coordination between the regions, stressing that efforts will focus on creating a permanent space within each regional centre for education and training and further training (French : CREFOC) in order to generalise this tradition.

This event was organised during the holidays, said CNTE director Mahdi Ezine, stating that the launch of the first edition took place in 2015. It brought together, he recalled 60 inspectors, 120 teachers and 200 students from different parts of the country.

Several parallel activities took place on this occasion within the CNTE, namely the competition “Tunisian olympiad in programming”, held at the initiative of the association “informatics tunisian association” (ITA).

According to ITA President Dorsaf Benna Chelly, this competition aims to select four winning students to represent Tunisia in Japan from September 1 to 8, 2018 at the International Olympiad in Programming (IOI).

In October 2017, some 2,000 students submitted their applications, 55 of which were selected. The selected candidates are called to solve, she explained, during 5 hours, three problems inspired from the everyday life by means of a programming language (Pascal, C and C ++). The association ITA, specified its president, work to allow Tunisia to find its place in the international Olympics of programming.

Besides, another project entitled “Wiki for kids”, was presented by its promoter, Brahim Ben Khlifa, professor of computer science, winner of several international competitions in computer science. This project is, he said, to create a “wikipedia” for children, allowing them to publish articles on wikipedia that is an online collective encyclopedia project. The goal, he added, is to root in children a culture of research, initiative and respect for the rights of the author, in addition to contributing to the enrichment of “wikipedia” to the international scale.
