9329 Tunisians tried to cross the borders in 2017 (FTDES)

Abdessatar Sahbani, head of the Tunisian Social Observatory under the Forum for Economic and Social Rights said Thursday 9,329 Tunisians had tried to cross the border in 2017.

Speaking at press conference in Tunis, Sahbani added that 66% of Tunisians who tried to cross the borders managed to reach Italy.

FTDES immigration officer Valentin Bonnefoy said Tunisia ranks 8th among the nationalities of illegal migrants in Italy.

He added that the number of people arrested in illegal migration attempts by the Tunisian authorities is 3,187 people, up 200% compared to the year 2016.

The same source noted that the highest number of people intercepted in illegal migration attempts was recorded in October 2017, with 951 people arrested as against 159 in October 2016.
