Abandoned Kunchogu-Kaweru Bridge Project Cuts Off Sissala East Communities from Essential Services

Kwapung: The abandoned Kunchogu-Kaweru bridge project near Kwapung in the Sissala East Municipality has significantly disrupted access to essential services for several communities in the region. The stalled project has left residents of Kwapung and Wuru, located near the Burkina Faso border, unable to access necessary health facilities and markets, especially during the rainy season.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Suleyman Diwore, the Assembly Member for the Kwapung Electoral Area, highlighted the severe impact on the livelihoods of residents due to the abandoned bridge project. The construction, which began six years ago, remains incomplete, jeopardizing the lives of residents. Pregnant women in Kwapung, who rely on the Kunchogu Health Centre for delivery services, face significant challenges during the rainy season when the river is impassable.

Mr. Diwore explained that midwives at the Kunchogu Health Centre have advised against home deliveries, yet the lack of a local health facility forces women to travel to Kunchogu. In cases where the river is full, they must resort to traditional delivery methods. Additionally, residents facing health emergencies, such as snakebites, are often unable to access necessary medical facilities.

Economically, the stalled bridge project has prevented the transportation of farm inputs and produce. Mr. Diwore expressed frustration that even with favorable market prices in places like Tumu or Upper East, the community is forced to trade in Burkina Faso due to accessibility issues, which brings additional charges and challenges.

Concerns about the project have been raised at Assembly meetings, with the Sissala East Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) assuring efforts to complete the bridge. Chief Pio Emmanuel Ali Kwabalugu of Kwapung also noted delays in constructing an irrigation facility due to access issues for drilling machinery during the rainy season.

Residents are appealing to the government to expedite the project’s completion to alleviate their challenges in accessing essential services and improve their livelihoods. In response, Mr. Adamu Yakubu, the Sissala East MCE, confirmed that the project plans are advancing and that a health facility is planned for the Kwapung community to ensure timely healthcare access.
