Abid Briki: Tunisia had 800,000 civil servants by late 2016

Tunisia had 800,000 civil servants at the end of 2016, said Minister of Civil Service and Governance Abid Briki.

“The number of civil servants is rising again according to the statistics of 2016,” he said during a hearing session before the Committee on Administrative Reform, Good Governance, Corruption and Control of the Management of Public Funds, adding that the reform of the public administration will start in March.

According to the minister, this increase can be explained by the recruitments made before and after the Revolution, when 9,000 civil servants were reintegrated as part of the general amnesty.

In addition, he said, the recruitment of 2,400 wounded of the Revolution, the recruitment of 1,000 construction workers, 70,000 workers as part of subcontracting, 22,000 individuals under the mechanism 16 and 120 people formerly filed by the police.

Besides, the minister stressed that 2017 will be the year of major reforms in the sector of the civil service and the Tunisian administration, highlighting the implementation soon of the strategy of development, modernisation and digitisation of the administration.
