Abir Moussi calls to remove from political scene all parties and associations with religious reference

President of the Free Destourian Party (PDL) Abir Moussi, on Sunday invited “the centrist and modernist parties to remove from the political scene all parties and associations with religious reference”.

“We call on political parties in Tunisia to remove from the political scene parties and associations with religious reference, because they pose a threat to the civility of the state,” she said during a reflection meeting on political Islam and civil status.

“We invite them, moreover, to support our call to classify political parties according to their identity and political and ideological orientations,” she added.

Abir Moussi also called for preserving the civil character of the state and revising the framework organising political parties and associations.

There are parties in power, she said, who are closely linked, historically and organically, with the organisation of the Muslim Brotherhood. An organisation which, she said, does not recognise the civilian character of the state and is known for its “obscurantist project” and its links with terrorism.

The political reality shows, indeed, that there are political parties in Tunisia that admit, openly, not to recognise the Constitution and the positive law, she noted. She added that despite this, they are present on the political scene and their activities enjoy a wider media coverage than that enjoyed by parties defending the civil character of the state.

To a question about the conversion of Ennahdha into a civil and non-religious party, Abir Moussi considered that the statements of Ennahdha leaders are, in fact, only “marketing”. There is no document that says the separation between religion and politics, according to her.

The Ennahdha party wants us to believe that it is now a moderate political party and attached to the civil character of the state, whereas the reality is quite different (…) Ennahdha is a party that uses “a new tactic “and a” new strategy “in order to stay in power, she said.
