Acting Chief Justice Urges Judicial Service to Embrace Empathy Alongside Excellence

Accra: Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has called on lawyers, judges, and staff of the Judicial Service to not only excel in their duties but also to approach their work with empathy. "Let this legal year be one in which we will not only discharge our duties with excellence, but also with empathy," he stated during a reception marking the opening of the 68th Legal Year at the Fore Court of the Supreme Court in Accra.

According to Ghana News Agency, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie emphasized the importance of viewing each case as more than just a docket number, urging legal professionals to consider each case as "a story, a life, a citizen who deserve our best." He expressed his gratitude to the judges of both superior and lower courts for their dedication and acknowledged the profound impact their decisions have on people's lives.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie also highlighted the crucial role of the Judicial Service's staff, describing them as the backbone of the service. He praised the clerks, registrars, bailiffs, interpreters, ICT officers, cleaners, security, and administrators for being the "silent engine" that keeps the courts running smoothly. He noted that although the public may rarely see them in action, their contributions are vital to the functioning of the justice system.

Addressing the bar, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie referred to lawyers as "ever-present partners in justice," acknowledging their role in keeping the judiciary on its toes and shaping the law through advocacy and scholarship. He stressed the importance of viewing each other as allies in the pursuit of truth and fairness, rather than opponents.

As the legal year commenced, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie urged stakeholders to focus on enhancing accessibility, efficiency, and integrity within the judicial system. He emphasized that no one should be denied justice due to their social or economic standing, and that court processes should be timely and effective to inspire public confidence.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie expressed confidence that through collaboration and a shared spirit of service, the Judiciary could not only overcome challenges but also create a legacy that future generations would be proud of.
