Activist Abderrahman El Heni dies

Abderrahman El Heni, a former political activist and supporter of Tunisia and the Arab nation, died on Monday at the age of 87.

Born in Sidi Hamada, in the governorate of Siliana, from a family imbued with the culture of knowledge and militancy, Abderrahman El Heni studied at the Zitouna Mosque.

After graduating, he studied law in Baghdad, Iraq, before settling in Cairo where he adopted Nasser’s ideology and joined the Arab nationalist movement.

At the beginning of the seventies, he joined the Tunisian Bar.

In 1981, he co-founded with Bashir Essid the party of the Arab nationalist gathering that did not receive a legal visa.

In 1985, he helped create the section of the League for Human Rights Defence in Siliana.

In 1998, he co-founded another party with Sheikh Tahar BoularAs who also did not receive a legal visa.

He experienced imprisonment and persecution for running twice to the presidential election in 1989 and 1994.

Abderrahman El Heni will be buried on Tuesday in the cemetery of Carthage Hannibal after Al-Asr prayer.
