AfDB Provides Euros 122 Million for Financing Construction of Bizerte Bridge

The African Development Bank (AfDB) granted Tunisia on Thursday a loan of 122 million euros (about 361 million dinars) to contribute to the financing of the Bizerte Bridge project whose total cost at 750 Million Dinars (MD).

The loan agreement, which is repayable over 19 years, including 7 years of grace and has an interest rate of 0.44%, was signed by Minister of Development, Investment and international cooperation Zied Ladhari and AfDB Director General for North Africa Mohamed El Azizi.

Tunisia has already mobilised for this project 123 million euros (364 MD), obtained from the European Investment Bank (EIB) in addition to state contribution of 32.3 million euros (95 MD).

Ladhari stressed that this project will generate a new economic dynamic in the region and with other regions including Greater Tunis, noting that this project will promote the resolution of the problem of acute congestion of road traffic and improved mobility in the city of Bizerte as well as its connectivity to the other economic poles of the country.

The project to build a new bridge outside the city and road links with the A4 motorway will channel traffic from a destination other than downtown Bizerte and free transit through the moving bridge, through which passes more than 44 thousand vehicles per day.

In 2017, the cooperation between Tunisia and AfDB focused on the sectors of agriculture, communication technologies, infrastructure, education and budget support with about 1200 MD.

Present at the signing ceremony, Minister of Equipment, Housing and Spatial Planning Mohamed Salah Arfaoui indicated that the tender for this project will be launched before June 2018, while work will begin in 2019 and will be spread over 3 years and half.

This bridge will be fixed and will extend on 2070m, at the level of the channel of Bizerte and with height of 56 meters which allows the passage of all the types of ships according to him.

The project will be carried out in three phases: the first involves the creation of a south link through the construction of a 4.5 km motorway, while the second phase involves the construction of a main bridge. As for the last phase, it provides for the creation of a northern link and a 2.5 km motorway.
