Afek Tounes to boycott legislative elections

Afek Tounes Thursday said it will not participate in the upcoming legislative elections and urged the Tunisian people, civil society and political forces to stand up to the “the authoritarian drift” of the political power and the grassroots democracy project.

The election decree published on September 15 is “the cornerstone of this grassroots project,” the party said in a statement following a national council meeting on Wednesday. Several weaknesses were identified, particularly in relation to the representation of women and young people, the geographic distribution and public funding of political parties.

This decree-law “promotes clientelism” and nurtures “regionalism” which, the party said, will lead to “the collapse of the State and threatens the stability and unity of its institutions.”

Afek Tounes also called for early presidential elections.
