Africa, market for Tunisian exports in coming years (minister)

Africa will be the market for Tunisian exports in the coming years, said Industry and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Minister Slim Feriani. This nonetheless will not affect the pace of exports to Europe.

The African market is a promising one, particularly as the African population is projected to reach 2.5 billion by 2050, Feriani said on the sidelines of the African Economic Forum held April 24-25 in Tunis.

Tunisia needs to strengthen its ties with African countries and enhance logistics in a context of fierce competition to conquer the market.

Tunisia’s export performance in Africa is sill weak; a stronger value added is required along with an increased technological content for agri-food exports in particular, the Minister highlighted.

Feriani laid emphasis on the importance of increasing packaged olive oil exports to Africa to 40,000 tonnes in the coming years.

The African Economic Forum is of paramount importance for the promotion of Tunisian products, he said.

The forum was initiated by the Ministry of Trade, in partnership with the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), the International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation (ITFC) and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).

It eyes a stronger South-South partnership and trade among African countries. It also seeks to identify greater cooperation opportunities between economic and institutional operators in the continent.
