Agreement to provide school transportation for 2,000 schoolchildren from disadvantaged regions inked

A three-year agreement to provide school transportation for 2,000 schoolchildren per year in disadvantaged regions was signed on Wednesday in Tunis between CEO of Tunisie Telecom Fadhel Kraiem and President of the Almadanya Foundation (Tunisian Association for Social Development) Lotfi Maktouf.

“Under this partnership, Tunisie Telecom pledges to co-finance the school year 2017 / -2018, 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 in 13 governorates, namely Beja, Bizerte, Jendouba, Kasserine, Kairouan, Kebili, El Kef, Mahdia, Nabeul, Siliana, Sidi Bouzid, Manouba and Zaghouan “, said Tunisie Telecom CEO at a ceremony organised on this occasion.

Tunisie Telecom and the Almadanya Foundation have launched this new challenge of transporting students from rural and remote areas for the next three school years.

This action consists of renewing the sponsorship concluded in 2014 of the initiative called “FATMA”, whose mission is to transport schoolchildren from rural areas and disadvantaged regions whose homes are at a distance from 5 to 13 kilometers from the nearest school.

Kraiem said that Tunisie Telecom and Almadanya have succeeded, during these three years of partnership to benefit 3,900 schoolchildren of rural school transport (2014/2015, 2015/2016 and 2016/2017), i.e. 1,300 schoolchildren per year.

For his part, the President of the Almadanya Foundation, emphasized that the Fatma programme has contributed significantly to the creation of jobs since it is based on the establishment of shuttle logistics in coordination with the unions and the associations of rural taxis, in cooperation with the Tunisian State.

Through this initiative, aimed at reducing the school drop-out rate and making the right to education a real and non-theoretical right, the rate of school absenteeism has dropped from 45% to 3.6% within schools attended by pupils who benefit from this programme, in addition to improving their school performance.
