Aid to Tunisia will be doubled, 1.2 billion euros committed up to 2020 (Hahn)

Aid to Tunisia will be doubled, said European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Johannes Hahn. 1.2 billion euros of EU funds are committed up to 2020, he announced, while underlining the need to invest them to stimulate economic growth.

The European Commissioner said, as he met Tuesday with President of the Republic Beji Caid Essebsi in Carthage, there is need for a roadmap between Tunisia and the European Union that spells out priorities of cooperation for the years to come.

He spoke, in this vein, about the outcome of talks that addressed the future of relations in last July’s Brussels meeting.

The President of the Republic emphasised the importance of ties binding Tunisia and the EU and said he welcomed proposals geared towards strengthening partnership with Europe in all sectors.

In another connection, Caid Essebsi shed light on the agreements signed during his last December’s Brussels visit as part of the first Tunisia-EU Summit, mainly in connection to cooperation in vocational training, higher education and youth. He cited, in this respect, ERASMUS programme.

The meeting, attended by Foreign Minister Khemaies Jhinaoui, also focused on the latest developments in Libya and the key role of neighbouring countries in reaching a political settlement of the crisis.

Johannes Hahn is paying a working visit to Tunisia on September 4-5.
