“Air Quality Monitoring” campaign launched in Greater Tunis

Minister of Local Affairs and Environment Riadh Mouakher signaled the start in Ariana the national campaign for “Air Quality Monitoring” in the governorates of Greater Tunis (Ariana, Tunis , Ben Arous, Manouba), through the establishment of a mobile laboratory to measure air pollutants over three months in order to improve its quality.

Mouakher said in a statement to TAP that air quality control is carried out within the framework of the national air quality monitoring network which was set up within the National Agency for the Protection of Environment, which includes stationary air quality monitoring stations and mobile laboratories to determine the quality of air and the degree of pollution.

It also involves the development of pollution prevention plans and programmes and the provision of necessary information and indicators on the environment of the air sphere to all stakeholders, proliferation of air pollutants in order to identify the most polluted areas.

“It is time to implement the traffic plans in big cities and to develop public transport so to be environment-friendly,” he said.

Legal and legislative frameworks should also be used as a means of engaging all industries, stressing that air quality in Tunisia remains in line with international standards, despite the fact that air pollutants have reached maximum levels in some industrial zones and cities.

Riadh Mouakher stressed that the environment situation in Tunisia is not catastrophic despite the existence of certain phenomena of pollution of environment, calling on the citizen and the components of the civil society to participate in the awareness campaigns to combat certain practices that damage the environment.

Air quality control at the Arianna governorate, from 12 to 28 July 2017, should concern the headquarters of the municipality and the technological centre in El Ghazala, Mahmoud El Matri hospital, the Bizerte road where the air pollutants will be measured continuously. The objective is to diagnose the situation of the air and its quality, to raise public awareness of the negative impacts of air pollutants on health and to assist in decision-making in order to propose ways to improve air quality in these regions.
