“Al-Forqane” brigade terrorism case: death sentence and fourteen life sentences handed (judicial source)

The Fifth Criminal Chamber of the Tunis Court of First Instance, specializing in terrorism cases, on Saturday at dawn, handed a death sentence and fourteen life sentences in five trials involving the al-Forqane brigade in the attempted murder of MP Ridha Charfeddine, the attempted assassination of security officer Jamel Bouraoui and the murder of security officer Ezzedine Haj Nasr.

The other judgments rendered vary between the dismissal and a sentence of 35 years in prison, said Sofiene Selliti, spokesman for the Tunis Court of First Instance.

The Fifth Criminal Chamber of the Tunis Court of First Instance also ruled on two other terrorist cases involving al-Forqane brigade, after the joinder of three cases related to them.

In the first case involving 14 defendants, including two brothers, a woman and a security guard, the sentences handed down vary from life imprisonment to three years in prison.

In the second case, judgments were rendered against 11 under arrest who were sentenced to between two life sentences and two years in prison.

Al-Forqane brigade was broken up in November 2015.

According to the Interior Ministry, the brigade command cell is in Libya and is linked to the Daesh group.

It planned attacks on security institutions and tourist facilities as well as the assassination of national political, media and cultural personalities.

The Ministry of the Interior had announced, in various statements, the discovery of three arms and ammunition depots in the Sousse and Medenine governorates belonging to “al-Forqane” brigade and the arrest of wanted Takfiri elements, members of this brigade.
