“Al-Horra” will work to “bring down” bill of good governance authority (Sahbi Ben Fraj)

Sahbi Ben Fraj, member of Al-Horra group, said that his parliamentary group will work, in coordination with the majority of other blocs and a number of independent deputies, to “bring down” the draft law on good governance and fight against corruption (constitutional authority).

In a statement to TAP on Sunday, he said the law governing the current anti-corruption authority “is by far better” than the new text proposed for the new constitutional authority.

Continuing the plenary examination of the draft law on the good governance authority and fight against corruption is scheduled for next Wednesday.

Sahbi Ben Fraj noted that this bill includes the same procedural, legal and administrative obstacles encountered by the government in its war on corruption, recalling that the Chahed government has used exceptional measures to begin its anti-corruption campaign.

The members of the Al-Horra group’s Corruption Follow-up Unit met on Saturday with Chawki Tabib, President of the National Anti-Corruption Authority (INLUCC), to discuss the bill.

In a joint statement published on the authority’s website, INLUCC and Al-Horra say that the new law “poses several legal shortfalls to the new anti-corruption body.”

The bill, as proposed, puts the case under the authority of the Ministry of Finance and the government, the same source said, adding that under this bill, justice can “suspend” or “freeze” the activities of the authority from the time it seizes a case on which the authority has been engaged.

Last Wednesday, INLUCC called for a commitment by all to draw up an organic law for the establishment of an independent authority of good governance and fight against corruption which would enjoy effective prerogatives to ensure a real balance between powers.
