Algeria: Use of Anti-Terrorism Laws Against Hirak Movement, Source of Concern to International Community – Italian Newspaper

The daily newspaper deplored the massive abuses carried out by the Algerian authorities to repress this peaceful movement, reporting UN experts’ deep concern over this situation.

In a communication officially released on December 27, 2021, several UN bodies under the Human Rights Council had questioned Algerian authorities on undue prosecution of hundreds of activists, journalists and human rights defenders, under charges related to terrorism, the newspaper recalled.

These entities clearly indicate that the Algerian penal code, by virtue of which these prosecutions have been carried out, is not in conformity with the definitions of terrorism as defined by the Security Council resolutions.

In this regard, the Italian media mentioned the serious legal gaps, especially on the provisions on terrorist acts repression, as contained in the criminal code, and those dealing with the protection of information and administered documents.
