Obuasi: AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has donated various items worth GH?600,000 to support the 2024 National Farmers' Day celebrations in the Ashanti region. The donation aims to bolster agricultural productivity and reward the efforts of local farmers. According to Ghana News Agency, the mining company has been a consistent supporter of agricultural initiatives in the country, participating in programs such as Obuasi Goes Agro and the Climate Resilience Oil Palm plantation. This year's contribution includes valuable farming items distributed to eight Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies in the region, as well as prizes for the regional best farmer. The beneficiary districts received a range of items including 40-inch LED Televisions, machetes, GTP Wax Prints, Sunphosate Glyphosate, weedicides, key bar soaps, knapsack sprayers, motorized tricycles, Wellington boots, brush cutters, portable seed planters, oil palm pruning chisels, telescopic poles, Malayan knives, and grinding stones. Mr. Kwaben a Addo, the Economic Development Officer of AngloGold Ashanti in charge of Agriculture, stated that these items would directly benefit farmers by aiding their farming activities. The initiative has been part of AngloGold Ashanti's socio-economic development plan, which started in 2019, and has positively impacted over 300 farmers, improving their living conditions. This year, the company introduced a new award category for the best oil palm farmer to encourage participation in the climate resilience oil palm project. Mr. Paul Amokoran, the Ashanti Regional Director of Agriculture, expressed his gratitude to AngloGold Ashanti for their significant contributions towards agriculture and food security. He highlighted that the support would enhance sustainable agriculture and improve livelihoods in the region. The donation is seen as a validation of the company's efforts to promote climate-resilient farming practices, empower small-holder farmers, and foster economic growth and rural development.
