Arab Ministerial Congress on “Integration of Social Dimensions of 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” closes

The work of the Arab Ministerial Congress on “the integration of the social dimensions of the 2030 sustainable development plan into the social policies of the Arab States” closed on Tuesday in Gammarth.

Held as part of the cooperation between the Ministry of Social Affairs and the technical secretariat of the Social Affairs Arab Ministers Council, the two-day congress aims, according to the organisers, to fight against poverty, especially in priority areas and institutionalisation of common intervention mechanisms and activation of the societal development approach and local society, in addition to the development of new programmes and innovative mechanisms for social integration and the fight against poverty.

The Ministers of Development and Social Affairs and the participants in this congress commended the achievements of the Arab countries in the social and development fields.

They emphasised the need to achieve peace and security in the Arab region in order to enable Arab countries to complete their development process and consolidate social cohesion.

They called for continued efforts to implement Arab plans and strategies from the Arab Summit, ministerial councils and specialised commissions.

They recommended preventive and anticipatory approaches to social policies that are in perfect harmony with economic policies.

Member States are called to submit to the technical secretariat of the Council of Arab Ministers of Social Affairs, annual reports containing data and statistics on the implementation of the 2030 sustainable development plan in order to prepare the Arab regional report to be submitted to the Arab Development Summit and the United Nations General Assembly.

Participants also called for a coherent national strategy for the full inclusion of people with disabilities to involve them in developing strategies for implementing the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan.

They called on member states to support the efforts of the Council of Arab Social Affairs Ministers in the elaboration of an Arab Strategy on the elderly.
