President Beji Caid Essebsi received Saturday evening, at the headquarters of his residence in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on the sidelines of his participation in the work of the 29th Arab summit.

In a statement to TAP, Abdelkrim Harmi, diplomatic adviser for the Presidency of the Republic reported that the interview focused on the Palestinian cause and the latest developments in the region.

He added that the head of state reaffirmed Tunisia’s support for the Palestinian people and their right to an independent state with Al Quds as its capital. He added that Tunisia will continue its international efforts to advocate for this goal.

For his part, President Mahmoud Abbas praised Tunisia’s efforts in this direction and stressed the need to reach, at this summit, a common Arab position that supports the claims of the Palestinians.

Abbas briefed Caid Essebsi on recent developments in the occupied territories and the recent Israeli escalation. He also takled about the Palestinian reconciliation and the results of his recent travels and contacts at the Security Council level and internationally to explain the Palestinians’ position on the US initiative.

The Palestinian president stressed his country’s commitment to a neutral quadripartite structure for the organisation of an international peace conference under the United Nations tutelage so that the US does not have a monopoly on mediation.

Regarding the situation in the region, the diplomatic adviser said that both parties have expressed concern over recent events in Syria. They stressed the urgent need to find a political solution to this crisis to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people and restore peace and stability in this brotherly country.
