ARP: Democratic bloc decides to boycott vote on bills tabled by government

The Democratic bloc in parliament has decided to boycott the vote on bills tabled by the government, in protest against the refusal of Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi to attend question time in parliament.

This was stated by chair of the democratic bloc Noomane el-Euch at a press briefing in the Bardo Palace Tuesday.

He added that his bloc has also decided to challenge bills that will be adopted by parliament, noting that Mechichi has not attended any question time since his government won confidence in parliament.

MP Samia Abbou said is not responding for months to requests made by the parliament for questions, “despite the multiple official correspondence that I myself have sent as a member of the Bureau of the House of People’s Representatives,» she pointed out.

The government does not attach importance to the will of parliament. It is in collusion with the Bureau of the ARP and its president, she said.

For his part, Abderrazek Aouidet, MP and member of the democratic bloc, noted that the prime minister was present only at the time of the vote of confidence and the plenary dedicated to the Cabinet reshuffle.

He said Mechichi does not care about MPs’ demands, despite the critical health situation and the delicate socio-economic situation.

He added that the members of the bloc are firmly resolved to boycott the bills proposed by the government, especially that relating to the opening in Tunis of an office of the Qatari Fund for Development.

MPs of the bloc will challenge the constitutionality of this bill if it is adopted by parliament on Tuesday.

The democratic bloc, composed of MPs of the Democratic Current and the Echaab movement, has a total of 38 members. It is part of the opposition.
