ARP passes bill on Murabaha agreement between STEG and ITFC

The House of People’s Representatives (ARP) passed at a plenary session Tuesday the bill on the approval of the guarantee agreement signed on February 12, 2021 between Tunisia and the International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation (ITFC), member of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) group. It pertains to a Murabaha agreement signed between STEG and ITFC to contribute to funding the import of natural gas.
The bill was approved in its entirety with 83 votes in favor, 9 abstentions and 13 votes against.
Minister of Trade and Export Development and Acting Minister of Industry, Energy and Mines, Mohamed Boussaid said that “the sums owed to the Tunisian Electricity and Gas, by its customers amount to 2,000 million dinars (MD), of which 55% by the private sector, and 45% by the public sector. «The company is in the process of recovering these debts”, he indicated.
Boussaid added that STEG has an additional financial need, which is among the sums owed to the State. It is the difference between the cost of production of electricity and the selling price, which amounts to 2000 MD, and that the State used to reimburse to the company.
“The company would have achieved its financial balance if this amount estimated in total to 4,000 MD was included in the budget of STEG.
