The House of People’s Representatives (ARP), on Wednesday evening, passed the domestic workers’ draft law with 102 votes for, 11 abstentions and 1 against.
According to Article 1, the law aims to organize domestic work to ensure the right to decent work without discrimination in accordance with the Constitution and international conventions ratified by Tunisia.
It sets the conditions of domestic work, the obligations of workers and employers by determining control and inspection mechanisms and penalties for violations of these provisions.
This law prohibits the domestic work of children and mentions in its Article 6 the recruitment of domestic workers directly or exclusively through accredited employment offices under fixed-term or open-ended contracts.
Any intermediary can be punished by imprisonment from 1 to 3 months and a fine of 3 thousand dinars.
The law stipulates, among other things, that domestic workers benefit from a guaranteed minimum wage, working hours not exceeding 48 hours per week and a weekly rest day.
