ARP to hold plenary to discuss President Saïed’s refusal to promulgate Constitutional Court law

Members of the Bureau of the House of People’s Representatives (French: ARP) have decided to hold a plenary session on Tuesday, June 29 to discuss the issue of the refusal by President of the Republic Kaïs Saïed to promulgate the law on the Constitutional Court.
This was stated on Monday by assessor in charge of information and Ennahdha’s MP Maher Medhioub at a press briefing to announce decisions emanating from the meeting of the ARP Bureau.
On the requests for the lifting of parliamentary immunity, Medhioub said the Speaker of Parliament has received during the period from November 13, 2020 to June 14, 2021 a single request to lift parliamentary immunity of a member.
“This was transferred to the Committee on Rules of Procedure, Immunity and Parliamentary and Electoral Laws,” he said.
Early last May, the parliament adopted, in second reading, the amendment of the law on the Constitutional Court, after its return by the President of the Republic, Kaïs Saïed, on April 3, 2021, under the pretext that it did not abide by “the provisions of the Constitution concerning the constitutional deadlines for the election of members of the Court.”
The amendments to the law provide for reducing the majority required to elect the court members from 145 to 131 MPs (out of a total of 217) and cancel candidacy sponsored by parliamentary blocs.
At a meeting with Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi and acting Justice Minister Hasna Ben Slimane last Friday, President Saied highlighted the need to refer the requests for lifting parliamentary immunity to the House of People’s Representatives “to get everyone to face their responsibilities.”
