Kumasi: The Manhyia Palace in Kumasi has mandated the suspension of all commercial, financial, educational, and recreational activities within the Greater Kumasi area on Thursday, September 18, 2025. This directive aims to provide an opportunity for all residents to participate in the burial observance of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, and to pay homage to her legacy.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Manhyia Palace has issued specific guidelines for mourners wishing to pay their respects to the Asantehemaa while she lies in state. Mourners are requested to refrain from wearing earrings, remove headscarves if they are women, and avoid taking photographs to maintain Asante traditions and ensure a respectful procession past the body of the late queen mother.
Nana Effah Apenteng, Chairman of the Funeral Planning Committee, conveyed during a press conference in Kumasi that various groups are scheduled to pay their respects over the course of the week leading up to the burial. On Monday, September 15, 2025, religious and political entities, educational institutions, and corporate bodies among others are expected to join the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in mourning Nana Konadu Yiadom III.
On Tuesday, September 16, 2025, members of the judiciary, security agencies, state enterprises, and financial institutions, along with the general public, will have the opportunity to extend their condolences to Otumfuo. The following day, ministers of state, the diplomatic corps, parliamentarians, non-Ashanti chiefs, and representatives from mining companies will pay their respects.
The final day, Thursday, September 18, 2025, will see the presidency, former presidents and vice presidents, along with the diplomatic corps and the general public, offering their last respects. Additionally, the public is required to remain indoors from 3:00 pm on September 18, 2025, to facilitate the traditional burial procession from Manhyia Palace to the Breman Royal Cemetery, continuing until dawn the following day.
Nana Appenteng also emphasized the responsibility of the media to report accurately, adhering to the directives from Manhyia Palace, and to avoid sensationalism. Media outlets are urged to follow accreditation protocols to ensure respectful and smooth coverage of the events.
