Kumasi: The Ashanti Regional Health Directorate has intensified its public education efforts to combat the outbreak of cholera in the region. The initiative aims to raise awareness about preventive measures and promote hygiene practices to curb the spread of the disease, especially in light of recent cases reported in other regions.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Directorate has been actively engaging with the public through traditional media outlets and community information centres, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a clean environment and adhering to hygiene protocols. This proactive approach comes in response to confirmed cholera cases in the Greater Accra Region, as highlighted in a press release by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) on October 14, 2024. The release, signed by Director General Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, confirmed nine cases in Ada West and Ada East Districts as of October 11.
In line with the national public health response measures, the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate is f
ocusing on promoting hand hygiene and other preventive practices. Dr. Fred Adomako-Boateng, the Regional Director of Health Services, informed the Ghana News Agency that strict Infection Prevention Control practices are being implemented in all health facilities. He advised the public to consistently wash their hands with soap and safe running water before meals, cooking, and after using the toilet. Additionally, he urged people to drink only safe water, thoroughly wash fruits and vegetables, and avoid consuming cold foods.
Dr. Adomako-Boateng also encouraged individuals to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as continuous watery stool, vomiting, or fatigue. He emphasized the shared responsibility of preventing the disease, urging households to adopt hygienic practices to protect themselves and their communities.
