Assault on Abir Moussi: LTDH calls on the Ministry of Women and Public Prosecutor to take necessary measures

The Tunisian League of Human Rights (LTDH) called on the Public Prosecutor and the Minister of Women, Family and Seniors to take the necessary legal measures following the physical assault on MP Abir Moussi (bloc of the Free Destourian Party) by MP Sahbi Smara (unaffiliated).

The league also denounces “inappropriate gestures” and “that undermine her dignity” from Seifeddine Makhlouf (Al Karama coalition bloc).

After viewing the incident, the league said Thursday in a statement the assault on Abir Moussi reflects the prevalence of the sexist mentality linked to the extremist Salafist currents that permanently transgress human values.

The LTDH, in this context, condemned violence in all its forms and especially violence against women, saying the acts of Smara and Makhlouf “constitute an assault on all Tunisian women and a violation of the principles of human rights in their entirety.

The LTDH called on civil society to come up with a common position aimed at preserving human rights and to take all legal measures against any violation of women’s rights in general.

Abir Moussi was violently assaulted by MPs Sahbi Smara and Seifeddine Makhlouf at a plenary session dedicated to the review of a number of bills. She was protesting with members of her bloc the review of the draft law on the seat agreement between the Tunisian government and the Qatar Fund for Development.
