ATIDE says referendum process needs to be revised

The Tunisian Association for the Integrity and Democracy of Elections (French: ATIDE) said it is necessary to revise July 25 referendum process. This should encompasse the legal and administrative aspects as well as the issue of timing.

Likewise, safeguards for the observance of democratic principles underlying elections, in general, and the proper use of the referendum mechanism, in particular, need to be made available.

ATIDE voiced concern about what it called the “danger” facing the electoral process and said it is necessary ” to avoid whatever may undermine the integrity and democracy of this event.”

President of the Republic Kaïs Saïed named a constitutional law professor to head an advisory committee for a new republic under a presidential decree published on May 20 in the Official Gazette of the Tunisian Republic.
