Awareness campaign on water rationalization

The Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries organised on Sunday morning, as part of the national campaign to rationalise water consumption, an awareness campaign at the Mornag pay toll station, to draw the attention of road users to the need to be rational in the use of water.

Secretary of State for Water Resources and Fisheries Abdallah Rabhi noted that this campaign under the banner “Water for you and your children” aims to raise awareness of the water situation in the country and raise awareness to the need to manage water well.

He added that there is no need to talk about a water crisis in Tunisia despite the reduction of the per capita share of this wealth due to the rainfall deficit and the reduction of the reserves of water of the dams which reached 450 million m3.

In this context, he said that “Tunisia continues to distribute water continuously, unlike some countries which have adopted a policy of limiting daily pumping hours, as in Italy where average daily pumping does not exceed eight hours “.

Regarding the ministry’s strategy for securing additional resources to the national stock, the Secretary of State recalled the importance of the funds allocated to the desalination programme for sea waters, given that the water desalination station of the sea in Djerba will start in the next few months, in addition to the other stations in the Sahel and Zarat and the one scheduled in Kerkennah.

With regard to the problems that the supply networks suffer, Rabhi explained that they are linked to breakdowns in the water systems, the maintenance of rural distribution networks and the weakness of the rationalisation of the distribution of water at the local level, in addition to power cuts.

The amount of allocations for programmes to modernize the water system is estimated at about 3.800 million dinars. These are essentially projects in the pipeline, others to be started shortly and divided between the construction of water desalination stations, the dams’ connection projects and those for the good exploitation in addition to programmes aimed at the rational exploitation of water resources.

The citizens opinions addressed to TAP in the region were divided between the complaints about the problems caused by the continuous cuts in supply and the waste observed due to the breakdowns in certain networks, inappropriate management in the exploitation of this wealth and the deprivation of some farmers of their water needs for crops.
