BCT Governor underlines need to support struggling sectors to increase earnings

“We cannot continue this way: a structural deficit in the balance of trade and payments and macro-economic indicators (savings, investment, etc) on a downward trend,” said Marouan Abassi, the new Governor of the Central Bank of Tunisia (French: BCT).

There is need to ensure economic recovery and support struggling sectors, including tourism and extractive industries, to increase the country’s earnings, Abassi Thursday told a news conference at the seat of the Central Bank.

“Exceptional measures are required at such an exceptional situation,” Abassi further said. Rationalising importation and increasing exports and investments would help preserve the country’s key economic balances.

“Tunisia is a small country but an economy with a ‘comeback’ power,” the Governor underlined. Policy coordination with all stakeholders is a sine qua non condition for rebooting the economy.

Inflation, continuing to climb (7.1% in February 2018), badly affects investments. The BCT had to raise the key interest rate by 75 basis points, he said.
