BCT, Palestinian Monetary Authority sign four agreements

The Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT) and the Palestinian Monetary Authority, on Wednesday, signed four co-operation agreements to share experiences, expertise, training and financial supervision, in the presence of governors of the two banks Chedli Ayari and Azzam Shawa.

The first agreement concerns the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two institutions. It provides for strengthening of financial and banking relations and the exchange of experiences and data in various fields, including financial stability, banking supervision and payment systems.

The second agreement (memorandum of understanding) was signed between the Tunisian Professional Association of Banks and Financial Institutions (APTBEF) and the Association of Palestinian Banks, while the third agreement was signed between the Deposit and Consignment Fund and the Palestine Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Regarding the fourth agreement, it was concluded between the BCT Institute and the Palestinian Banking Institute.

Palestinian Monetary Authority Governor Azzam Shawa said the agreements will help break the blockade Palestine is living in, hoping to see the deal lead to the organisation of a Tunisian-Palestinian session in Palestine.

For his part, governor of the BCT Chedli Ayari emphasised the importance of these agreements which represent one of the forms of the Palestinian monetary sovereignty and open new prospects for the Tunisian-Palestinian relations.

Ayari expressed Tunisia’s commitment, through the BCT, to support Palestinian monetary sovereignty pending the realisation of full sovereignty of Palestine on its territory, noting that the Palestinian economy that will soon undergo a transitional phase is similar in some aspects to the Tunisian economy.

He added that the agreements reached favour the fight against corruption and money laundering.
