According to ghana news agency:ccording to Ghana News Agency, Togbe Afede made this appeal during the 12th Annual Conference of Chairpersons of Governing Boards/Councils, Chief Directors, and Chief Executives of the Public Services of Ghana in Ho. The conference was themed ‘Strengthening the Public Sector Leadership and Governance to Enhance Service Delivery.’ Togbe Afede highlighted the necessity for public servants not only to work hard but also to engage in continuous learning and education to effectively support national development goals.
Togbe Afede remarked that civil servants need to be creative and proactive agents of change rather than mere custodians of their tasks. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that Ghana remains competitive in the global economy, thereby maintaining a respectable position in terms of economic development. As the chair of the conference, he noted the timeliness of the meeting, which coincides with a period of significant change driven by citizens’ demands for improved economic management leading to growth, stability, and the provision of fundamental life amenities.
He also mentioned that this demand has led to commendable governmental initiatives such as the Big Push and the 24-Hour Economy. He stated that the success of these programs relies on the dedication and efficiency of public servants. Togbe Afede further underscored the importance of teamwork, transparency, and adhering to honesty to combat corruption, which he identified as a major barrier to development.
The event also featured President John Dramani Mahama as the Special Guest of Honour, who underscored the necessity of effective governance, gender inclusivity, and the integration of technology in public services. Prof Victor Kwame Agyeman, Chairman of the Public Services Commission, expressed the Commission’s strong commitment to supporting the government’s agenda to improve the nation’s economy and governance.
Prof Agyeman noted that the public services reflect the entire nation, asserting that effective public service delivery equates to national delivery. He emphasized that any reset of the system must begin with public servants, expressing confidence that once they are reset, the entire country will follow suit. The conference included high-level presentations, breakout sessions, and recognition of individuals who have rendered distinguished service to the Commission, including President Mahama.
