Ben Gharbia warns against reluctance to participation in municipal elections

Minister of Relation with Constitutional Authorities, Civil Society and Human Rights Mehdi Ben Gharbia warned against reluctance to participation in the upcoming municipal elections.

This event is an important aspect of exercising citizenship, he recalled at the opening of an awareness day held in Tozeur under Role of the administration and the civil society in supporting the electoral process.

The minister further called on the different components of the civil society to fulfill their roles so as to achieve the electoral process and to encourage Tunisians to take part in this political event.

Audiovisual media and written press must also be aware of the need to take part in this national effort so as to encourage the citizens to take part in these elections that will have an impact on their daily lives, he pointed out.

According to Ben Gharbia, the government had made every effort to provide the conditions needed for the smooth running of the electoral process and the necessary support for the Independent High Authority for the Election (ISIE).

He further affirmed that the implementation of the Chapter 7 of the Constitution on decentralisation and local authority, the principles of which are participatory democracy and governance, is a key cornerstone of the democratic transition.

The 2018 municipal elections will cover 350 electoral districts and will involve all Tunisians following the generalisation of the municipal system, he said.

3.5 million citizens, among inhabitants of rural areas where some 86 new municipalities have been set up, will partake for the first time in this event, he added.

This conference, held by the Ministry of Relation with Constitutional Authorities, Civil Society and Human Rights in collaboration with the Information Centre of Training, Studies and Documentation on Associations (IFEDA) and in co-ordination with ISIE, is the fifth and last of a set of awareness raising days on municipal elections set for May 6.

These awareness days were held in Tunis, Sousse, Gabes and El Kef and were carried out over 5 weeks.
