Berekum: The Berekum East Municipal Assembly in the Bono Region has introduced a 'Pay to Dump' policy to improve proper waste management and sanitation in the Municipality. Mr Gabriel Kyere, the Assembly member for the Mpatasie Electoral Area and Chairman for the Assembly's Sanitation Committee, disclosed this in an interview in Berekum.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Kyere stated that the policy was an innovative strategy to enhance the revenue generation of the Assembly. He emphasized that the revenue from the policy would be utilized solely to improve sanitation facilities. Mr Kyere was speaking during a clean-up exercise organized to rid the municipality of filth. He urged residents to take advantage of the policy and dispose of refuse in containers placed at strategic points in the municipality.
With the implementation of this policy, the assembly will enforce strict measures against littering or improper refuse disposal. Mr Kyere highlighted the Assembly's commitment to improving the quality of life for residents and urged community support for development programs.
During the clean-up exercise, participants cleared choked gutters, swept the streets, evacuated refuse dumps, and collected plastic waste and materials as part of the 'keeping Berekum clean' campaign.
