Bidders for alternative energy production to be selected soon (Hachem Hmidi)

The selection process for bidders for alternative energy production will take place on November 15, 2017, Hachem Hmidi, Secretary of State to the Minister of Energy, Mining and Renewable Energy announced on Wednesday.

Speaking at a workshop on “the deployment of renewable energies in the agricultural and agri-food sectors: opportunities, innovation and sustainability” held in the margins of SIAMAP 2017, Hamidi said this call for projects announced months ago is part of the national strategy to install 1,000 megawatts of renewable energy by 2020, with the goal of achieving 30 percent solar-generated electricity or wind turbine.

The secretary of state said that foreign and Tunisian companies participated in the call for projects, noting that maintenance of renewable energy production will be provided in the framework of public-private partnership, since the Tunisian company of Electricity and Gas (STEG) will provide some of this output and the rest will be provided by the private sector.

Regarding the production of Electricity from solar energy, Hamidi noted that the production of less than 10 megawatts will be subject to the system of authorisations while that of 50 megawatts will be done according to the system of concessions.

With respect to wind energy, the production of less than 30 megawatts is governed by the licensing system and the production of more than 100 megawatts will be subject to the system of concessions.

Preliminary forecasts have shown that the use of renewable energy in the agricultural sector can provide 300 megawatts of energy, i.e. achieving 10% of the target set in 2030.

The energy needs (all types of energy combined) are of the order of 100 thousand barrels daily, whereas production is only 45 thousand barrels, i.e. an energy import need of 50%.
