Bold and courageous decisions must be taken to improve investment climate in Tunisia (UTICA)

“Bold and courageous decisions must be taken to improve the investment climate in Tunisia,” Samir Majoul, President of the Tunisian Confederation of Industry, Trade and Handicraft (UTICA), said on Thursday, on the occasion of the national conference on “Industry and Small and Medium Enterprises: Guaranteed Economic Development”, organised in Tunis.

The president of the employers’ organisation called for improving the performance of all public services directly related to the company, mainly ports and all logistics services.

He also stressed the need to simplify administrative procedures, secure financing and adopt a tax policy that encourages investment.

Majoul also recommended fighting against smuggling and parallel trade and ensuring social peace by preventing the suspension of work on production sites.

He also emphasised the importance of promoting the textile, clothing, leather and footwear, mechanics and crafts sectors by helping businesses overcome their difficulties.

“There is also a need to keep up with technological change and focus on innovation and knowledge,” he said.

Speaking on this occasion, Noureddine Tabboubi, Secretary General of the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) said that SMEs, which represent more than 90% of the industrial sector, suffer from several difficulties including structural, financial and administrative.

In this context, Tabboubi emphasised the importance of reforming the vocational training sector in order to adapt it to the needs of SMEs.

According to the UGTT S-G, the promotion of SMEs requires the upgrading of their internal and external environment to ensure their sustainability, calling for the improvement of the investment climate and the facilitation of access financing and the simplification of administrative procedures.

Besides, Tabboubi stressed the need to speed up the publication of implementing texts for the establishment of the National Social Dialogue Council, which guarantees the foundations of decent employment.

For his part, Minister of Industry and SMEs Slim Feriani stressed that the national conference is part of achieving the objectives of the National Union Government which aspires to the establishment of a high technology value economy, energy saving, environment friendly, innovative, inclusive and sustainable.

“Tunisia aspires to the achievement of a qualitative change to become a technological platform,” he said.

The minister pointed out that to achieve this goal, an action plan has been put in place to preserve the current industrial fabric and increase the competitiveness of companies.

The plan also aimed at developing innovative activities, encouraging investment and improving the supervision and support of companies, especially in the inland regions.

The minister added that several events will be organised at the national and international levels to spread the image of Tunisia as an industrial and technological platform.

A tribute ceremony in honour of fifteen successful companies was organised on the sidelines of the conference.
