Bouchamaoui announces withdrawal of candidature for new term as UTICA President

President of the Tunisian Confederation of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts (UTICA) Wided Bouchmamoui announced on Wednesday at the opening of the UTICA’s 16th Elective Congress the withdrawal of her candidature for a new term as head of the confederation.

This decision has been made willingly and without pressure, she affirmed.

The Elective Congress attended by some 2.180 delegates, kicked off on Wednesday morning, on the occasion of the celebration of the confederation’s 71st anniversary. 31 members who will form the new executive board will thus be elected on the fringes of the Congress, 21 members among them will be elected by the delegates.

For the remaining 10 members, half (5 members) will be elected by the 24 regional presidents of the organisation, to represent the regional unions, and the rest (5 members) by the 18 professional federations.

According to a source from the UTICA, Bouchamamoui had expressed wish from the beginning not to run for this election but had wanted to complete the preparations of the Elective Congress in good conditions and to guarantee the success of regional conferences, especially as by December 4, 2017, the deadline for the submission of applications, 20 regional conferences had still not been held.

The list of contenders for the UTICA president includes members of the outgoing executive board and also other candidates for the new board.

93 candidates out of 122 businessmen and women who have submitted their applications, are competing for the UTICA new board.

The agenda of the congress includes the setting up of a provisional bureau to supervise the rules of procedure meeting chaired by the eldest delegate and assisted by the youngest among them.

The congress will then elect the commission of nominations, oppositions and elections which is made up of a member of each federation and a member of each regional union and elect the financial control commission composed of 6 members who have not run for the national executive board.

After the official opening of the congress, Bouchamamoui will present to the delegates a draft revision of the confederation’ statute for discussion and adoption. The main provision to be examined consists in allowing the national council (held every 6 months) to make amendments to the statute’s text.

The moral and financial reports will then be read out for discussion and adoption.

The 2nd session of the congress will be devoted to the presentation of candidates for the new executive board before starting vote, counting and the proclamation of the elections’ results and the election of the new UTICA president by the new board members.
