Cabinet meeting orders Education Minister to take all measures to end withholding of school marks

The Cabinet meeting held Wednesday at the Government Palace in Kasbah decided that the Minister of Education takes “all the organisational, legal and administrative measures” to put an end to the blocking of school marks decided by the education union, in order to allow students to recover their balance and stop “this unreasonable disruption of the education system”.

The decision was announced by Minister of Education, Hatem Ben Salem at a press briefing after the Cabinet meeting.

In response to a question from a reporter, Ben Salem said one of the possible measures to counteract the decision on withholding the school marks is the suspension of teachers’ salaries.

He added that during the Cabinet meeting he presented an overview of the situation of education, “in particular the serious repercussions of the unfair decision taken by one of the education unions to withhold school marks.

The Cabinet meeting reaffirmed that the decision of the education union “is illegal and does not represent a form of trade union activism because of its impact on family balance and social peace” and expressed concern about the consequences of this decision on students and their families.

The meeting emphasised “the constant position of the Ministry of Education, which categorically refuses any negotiation under the threat of withholding student marks and that negotiations in the context of labour disputes or between the Ministry and the education unions must take place “without preconditions and lead to serious measures”.

The Cabinet meeting welcomed “the position of its social partner, the Tunisian General Labour Union which has clearly expressed its refusal to accept a “blank school year” and its willingness to work alongside the government to avoid negative repercussions on social and family balances.
