Cabinet meeting to review situation of STEG before end November 2017 (Minister)

A Cabinet meeting to review the situation of the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG) will be held before the end of November 2017, Minister of Industry, Mining and Renewable Energy Khaled Kaddour said on Thursday.

Speaking at a hearing session organized by the parliamentary Industry and Energy Committee, he added that the aim is to identify the appropriate solutions to increase the budget of STEG which is facing several difficulties.

The minister said three power plants will be created in the next period, work of one of them have already started in Rades.

Kaddour added that a plant will be created in Skhira and that the specifications for this unit is being developed, saying his department will be responsible for launching an international tender in the year 2021.

The minister predicted an increase in electricity consumption peak in the summer of 2018, reaching 4,025 megawatts per day due to the daily rise in use of air conditioners, against 4,200 megawatts recorded in 2017.

He said the current situation requires providing 600 megawatts of electricity to meet the ever-increasing demand for electricity, indicating that his department is working to diversify the sources of its gas supply.
