Caid Essebsi denounces accusations of apostasy targeting thinker Youssef Seddik

President Beji Caid Essebsi denounced accusations of apostasy targeting thinker Youssef Seddik, insisting on the right to the difference of opinion, freedom of thought and effort of reflection (Ijtihad).

Quoted in a Presidency of the Republic press release, Caid Essebsi who received Youssef Seddik on Friday, reaffirmed his commitment to the freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution as the freedom of conscience and belief.

He stressed the importance of endeavouring to consolidate the unity of Tunisians and place the country’s highest interests above all.

In the past period, thinker, Islamologist and anthropologist Youssef Seddik had been the target of a smear campaign because of his statements to the media, in which he points, referring to historical data processed by several historians, to the codification of the Koran.
