Caid Essebsi meets IFJ President

President Beji Caid Essebsi met, Thursday at Carthage Palace, a delegation of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), led by Philippe Leruth, President of IFJ, who is visiting Tunisia in the framework of his participation in the international conference held on the observance of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists.

During the meeting, President CaAd Essebsi reiterated his commitment to freedom of the press and expression, one of the fundamental principles for the success of the democratic process in Tunisia.

He also said freedom of the press and independence of the media are the essential pillars of a pluralistic society based on respect for human rights and civil liberties, said a statement from the Presidency of the Republic.

For his part, the President of IFJ praised Tunisia’s efforts to consolidate the mechanisms for protecting press freedoms and its commitment to respect the principles of freedom of the press.

He said the signing of the Declaration on Media Freedom in the Arab World by President Caid Essebsi in August 2016 helped to strengthen IFJ’s confidence in the Tunisian democratic process and encouraged him to choose Tunisia to host the next IFJ congress in June 2019.

That congress takes place for the first time in Africa and the Arab world, he noted.

The meeting was attended by President of the National Union of Tunisian Journalists Neji Bghouri.
